Drupal 7 End of Life (D7 EOL) postponed until at least November 2023

Drupal 7 End of Life (EOL) was originally planned for Nov. 2020, about ten years after the initial release of the platform. Given the large user base, this was subsequently extended to Nov. 2021. Then, to provide relief and support for everyone impacted by the pandemic Drupal 7 End of Life was extended another year, to Nov. 2022. The pandemic continues to have a major impact on our lives and our businesses and there continues to be a very large user base with over 550,000 websites running the framework - an awesome testament to how great of a platform it is. As such, the security team, and the founder of Drupal, as well as Tag1 and the other Drupal 7 Extended Support (D7ES) providers, felt extending the date another year was the best thing for Drupal and the Drupal community. To support the community, leadership has decided that D7 EOL will be postponed again, until Nov. 2023, and then re-assessed annually thereafter. Are my favorite modules ready for D9?

As everyone in the Drupal community knows, Drupal 8 was a major shift in the way the software was built and will be developed into the future. Prior to Drupal 8, each major release essentially caused major rewrites for core and all of the contributed modules. Drupal 8 aimed to fix this; moving forward, Drupal upgrades will be easy and fast. You get a great return on investment upgrading to D9 because you can seamlessly upgrade to Drupal 10, then 11. Development is looking forward to newer versions, not looking back. This is great news if you want to upgrade to Drupal 9. Over half of the top 50 D7 contrib modules have versions which are Drupal 9 compatible or have compatible releases in progress. Many or all of the features you rely on are ready to go in the new versions. Upgrading modules to Drupal 8 or greater has been an iterative process, like previous versions. Issue trackers, sprints, and focused sessions helped move many of the major modules into readiness for later versions. Drupal 7 and Drupal 8 End of Life

At DrupalCon Global 2020, Tag 1 Consulting CEO Jeremy Andrews and Managing Director Michael Meyers talked about the upcoming Drupal 7 and Drupal 8 end of life. When a version of Drupal reaches EOL, the Drupal community will no longer work on it or provide free support. Core development stops entirely - no new features are added, no bugs will be fixed. The core issue queues will be locked, you will be prevented from adding anything to Drupal 7 & 8 Core on Drupal.org.
